YOU ARE NEEDED…The Hazlehurst/Jeff Davis Volunteer Fire Department is looking for eager, self motivated and adventurous men and women for the Dive Team. This is a volunteer search and recovery team working not only in Hazlehurst and Jeff Davis County but assisting adjacent counties in water related incidents. You will not only be challenged but you will be trained in the proper use of the latest SCUBA Diving Equipment in the Public Safety Diving community, such as Full Face Mask, Under Water Communications, Dry Suits and Redundant Air Systems just to name a few. Divers and non-divers are needed.
We will be holding a meeting 8:30am Saturday January 21st at the Hazlehurst Fire Headquarters. We will discuss the 2012 training schedule and fund raising events. We will also meet and greet new team members.

The Haz/JD Dive Team will hold it’s monthly meeting at Fire Headquarters Station #1 Thursday night at 7pm. Anyone interested in Public Safety Diving is welcome to attend. We will be discussing the upcoming training and meeting secludes. Please contact Waterdog Scuba or Wayne Feller if you are interested. Waterdog Scuba will also be offering “Introduction to PS Diving” to any local agency that would like to start a PSD team.

White’s Fusion Dry Suits…More Protection for Public Safety Dive Teams

During the past couple of months, the Hazlehurst-Jeff Davis Public Safety dive team has been called upon for numerous search and recovery dives in frigid waters. The divers comfortably worked without risk of hypothermia because they were wearing their White’s Fusion dry suits. Another pubic safety dive team, Milan Fire Department PSD team, has acquired two White’s Fusion dry suits and training from Waterdog Scuba. These suits will allow both teams to respond to more calls with added protection against cold water and hazardous materials in the water.

Special thanks to Shannon McAteer for traveling to the “woods” to share his presentation on diving the Andrea Doria…and to Aaron Duncan for helping him navigate. We were thrilled to serve 48 people at the Low Country Boil and award our Underwater Hunters. Thanks to Chad P. and Ashley for all their hard work! We are looking forward to some great pics, too, Margie.

Scott Fowler won 1st place, Paul Harris 2nd place and Chad Dawson 3rd place in this years Underwater Hunter Contest. Thanks to Oceanic for donating a Veo 180 nx dive computer, Free Divers Unlimited for donating a carbon fiber pole spear and Capt. Dan for donating a dive trip.

Low Country Boil and Awards Ceremony

South Georgia Sea Hunters and Waterdog Scuba will be sponsoring a FREE LOW
COUNTRY BOIL and 2009 WATERDOG UNDERWATER HUNTER AWARDS CEREMONY.

Our Guest Speaker will be Shannon McAteer from Savannah.

Shannon McAteer lives in Savannah, GA with his wife Christina and two of four children still at home; Kevin and Tucker. He is a retired Army helicopter pilot and co-owner of Atlantic Diving and Trading Company.

Shannon is a technical diving instructor for NAUI and TDI and teaches, technical/extended range nitrox, helitrox (recreational TRIMIX), TRIMIX, Cavern, Cave, and Mk 6 Poseidon re-breather.

In August of 2007 he and a student dove the Andrea Doria which lies in 240 feet of water off the coast of Long Island, NY. Fifteen divers have lost their lives trying to see the fallen liner. This dive will be the primary subject of his presentation.

The event will be held November 14th @ the Towns Bluff Heritage Center on the Altamaha River north of Hazlehurst from 6pm till 9pm.
